AU NATUREL

Nothing captures resort informality better than a billowy dress. For next season, designers propose effortless smocks and frocks in delicate shades of white and ecru, adding an unbleached purity to the look. Scarf-tie necks, drop shoulder seams and side slits provide even more ease, and crochet-doily appliqués add dimension. Silhouettes range from shirtdresses to caftans, and lengths go from midi to maxi. The look can be achieved with 2-piece sets as well.

FARM FRESH

Many of the looks being shown for Cruise/Resort confirm our Foragers Trend Tale for Spring 19. There are all sorts of country-fresh separates and dresses cut from humble dishtowel checks, simple stripes, crinkled plaids and homespun patchworks. Raw or self-fringed edges add to the unfettered feel, as do string-ties and flounced hemlines — most hitting an inch or two above the ankle.

TAKE ME TO MEXICO

The colors, prints and shapes of Mexico were a touchpoint for several designers this season, whether explicitly stated in show notes or inferred in a monkey print or a bit of serape striping. The reference shows itself in palm trees, embroidered florals, ball-fringe borders and folkloric motifs, all reinterpreted in a non-literal, modern way. White cotton eyelet brings freshness to the mix, and touches of black provide a nice contrast to pales or brights. The full skirt is a key element here, hitting anywhere from knee to ankle, and best cinched with a wide belt.

FURRY FEET

Furry feet are walking all over Pre-Fall (pun intended). Slippers, sandals, mules, and high heels add a cozy yet chic feel to any ensemble. Neutrals like shearling beige or ivory plush add a natural note, but brights or pastels work too. This playful footwear works with any ensemble, from flowy dresses to distressed denim to tailored looks.

FOULARD FOR LOVE

Scarf styling is not only about the print. It’s also about creative placements, celebrating border effects and exploiting the four-cornered shape with zigzag hemlines or asymmetric panels. For next spring, designers use scarves in all of these ways and more. Phebe Philo of Celine, the instigator of the scarf print craze of 2011, revived the idea this season with a supple square-shaped leather bag, its angled edged set off with inset leather stripes.
