THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE

Some of the best looks being shown for next Cruise channel a haute bourgeoisie look, replete with ladylike separates and status-scarf motifs. Gold jewelry is part of the look, as are gold chain belts, specator pumps and tailored shoulder or top-handle handbags. Items include bow blouses, printed bermudas, softly pleated or straight skirts and neat bootcut pants. The new penchant for logo prints shows itself as borders, facing for a lapel, or an ornamental motif for hoop earrings.

GOLDEN AGE

The golden tones that we forecast for Fall 19 (see Norwegian Wood trend tale) are making an early appearance for Cruise 19. The traditionally autumnal hues get a warm weather twist in easy athleisure looks like jogging sets, and in festive fabrics like glimmering matelassés or petal shaped spangles. Camel-toned leathers are part of the story, accented with a ceramic-green handle; the dull blue-green accent color is part of the Norwegian Wood palette as well.

FALL INTO SPRING

The collections may be for Fall-Winter 18, but all the florals say springtime. The runways are awash in splashy flower motifs of all kinds — watercolors, warp-prints, inky line drawings, silhouettes and appliqués. Gorgeous, giant blossoms adorn dresses, skirts, hooded cloaks, printed velvet tights, and even enliven a classic peacoat for men.

MORE & MOIRÉ

Moiré, that weave or pattern with its distinctive woodgrain or “watered” effect, is making a subtle but strong impression for next season. Designers used it for matched sets, silky tops, lustrous pants and lingerie looks, as well as for footwear and accessories. The lustrous fabric lends itself to petal colors like pink and mauve, metallic effects, and constructions using opposing grains. Most important is a casual attitude, offsetting moiré’s formal roots.

JAGGED EDGE

Another classic pattern getting an update this season is the houndstooth check. Along with its traditional cousins (like tartans and buffalo checks), houndstooth looks fresh when enlarged into medium or giant scales. The jagged motif is used for everything from neat coats to tailored capes, from wide-leg pants to string-bikini bottoms. There are even printed versions for silky tops or dresses.
