MINI MANIA

After seasons of 70s Bohemians, fashion skips back a decade with 60s Mod mania, complete with structured shapes, happy colors and plenty of minis. Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior believes the look encapsulates what young customers are looking for right now: “Something graphic and clean, minimal and positive. Because I think we have to give an optimistic outlook to the future.”  The look evolves for next spring with nearly neon hues, eye-catching placed motifs and graphic cutouts, whether a squared-off neckline or triangular openings at midriff or sides. Items include sleeveless or halter-neck shifts and bright A-line miniskirts. Get ready for a new “youthquake”.

OVER DRESSED

The dress-over-pants look, long a favorite of bohemian girls who layer vintage dresses over jeans, gets a chic update for Resort. Any dress length will work, but most hit below the knee. Pants can be cropped or extra-long, knit or woven, flared or straight. The combo looks right in mismatched prints or calm solids. Several designers showed the long-over-long proportion in matched sets as well, giving the look a beach pyjama feel.

KNIT ONE, PATCH TWO

The newest sweaters for resort are pieced and patched. The patched effect can be as simple as color-blocked intarsias or as complex as a collage of mixed stitchery. Space-dyed or marled yarns add more dimension, as do fringed edges. The technique works for flat knits and ribs as well as chunky cables, and a stretch lace version shows that these can be interpreted in cut-and-sew as well. Patchworked leather bags and sandals complete the look.

TRENCH RE-TRENCH

The trench coat, like a motorcycle jacket or a pair of jeans, is one of those basics that can be endlessly reinvented while still maintaining its design integrity. For next Resort, newness comes from sleeveless versions, color or fabric-blocking, cape-like slits for arms or puff-shouldered sleeves with channel-elastic cuffs. Fabrics include rustic linens, smooth cottons, lightweight corduroy and flat-quilted nylon. Novel touches can be as splashy as floral-appliquéd shoulders or as subtle as a single red button.

SECURITY BLANKET

In troubled times we need our blankeys. Luckily cozy wraps uptrend for next fall, whether it’s a big plaid throw worn shawl-style, or versions cut as ponchos, ruanas or capes. Jacquard wovens ensure that both sides are worth showing, and fringed or bound edges add to the authentic blanket feel.

TINSEL TOWN

The penchant for fringe and the lust for glitter come together in tinsel-like trim. Sparkling strips enliven fringe skirts or are used as an allover look to create intense texture. The festive strands — whether they are sequin-covered, metallic yarns or cut from Day-Glo plastic — work for everything from ironic Coco-inspired tweeds to smooth techno pieces. Most beguiling, perhaps, is the mysterious allure created when long tinsel peeks out from beneath a menswear suit.
