In a movement away from all the big and slouchy carryalls or teeny-tiny “necklace bags”, the small and structured bag is looking just right. Big enough to make a statement and petite enough to go from day to dinner, the neat bag will bring a polished note to everything from wear-it-to-work looks to casual dresses and jeans. Many have dual handles — one short and one for shoulder or cross-body — making these perfectly-proportioned handbags even more versatile. Ornamental closures and surface decorations add more interest.

Western-inspired looks are gracing the runway again this season, but this time it’s about specific elements rather than a head-to-toe effect. Classic Western shirts are complemented by statement trousers like leather jodhpurs, high-waisted trousers or plaid pants, freshening up the trend. Simple yet strong details include bolo ties, embroidered yokes, fringe, and re-thought cowboy boots will give any ensemble a touch of the Western feeling.

Plaids rule the pre-fall collections and are already showing up on men’s fall 18 runways. All kinds of plaids work: tartans, buffalo checks, tiny gun-checks, Prince-of-Wales layouts, box plaids, blanket plaids and more. Large-scaled versions look especially right, often ensembled with clashing or contrasting layers for a plaid-on-plaid effect. The pattern, which can go mid-century classic, 80s punk or 90s grunge, is used for bags, hats, socks and footwear as well.

Cardigans grow to giant proportions for Pre-fall 18. There are wide stripes going horizontally or vertically, as well as chunky yarns or mohair surfaces. Marabou trims or bejeweled shoulders make the item right for Holiday. Most of these roomy knits have extra-long sleeves, but sleeveless versions are great for layering. Whether in chalky pastels or classic camel, x-large cardis bring a grunge-y charm to any ensemble.
There’s a new green in town. Darker and bluer than last season’s “color of the year”, the new verdant shades fall somewhere between bottle green and blue spruce, with some emeralds and olives rounding out the range. The color looks particularly right in clean, minimalist silhouettes, or used for simple green-ground prints, cut into soft dresses. Mirror-finish silver, in the form of pants or footwear, brings in a modern edge.
The needle on nude has finally moved far beyond the Crayola orange-peach crayon. Current foundation lines (Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty has 40 shades) and lingerie (NubianSkin offers a wide range of skin-tones in underpinnings as well as shoes) reflect the vast variety of colors that human creatures come in, underlining the movement toward inclusiveness in beauty — whether it’s about color, size, shape or age. For next spring, designers dabble in the skin-tone palette, from ivory to beige to taupe to espresso, often in sheer stocking-like fabrics. With all the lovely complexion tones, lipstick shades like fuchsia, coral and carmine work perfectly as accents.
Roses emerge as a key motif this season looking more edgy than innocent. The romantic flower appears as embroidery on denim separates or metallic appliqués on leather biker jackets. Prints are photorealistic or ditsy and feature red blooms against a palette of pink, black and white.
