INDEPENDENT WOMEN

Red, white and blue remain a go-to for warm-weather apparel. As in our SS19 Trend Tale American Dreamz, the associations may change, but the references remain constant. For resort, there are western yokes, ginghams, fresh shirting stripes and intarsia knits, all in flag colors made more sophisticated with offbeat touches like pink, wine or light periwinkle blue. Wide leg pants, flared shorts or knitted briefs bring in a 40s bathing beauty feel, perfect for exotic beaches, country picnics or urban rooftop celebrations.

THE RETURN OF P.I.B.

Pants tucked into boots looks right again. The styling approach was recently dubbed PiB (Pants in Boots) by Man Repeller‘s blogger Anna Gray, who writes: “They make me think of Amelia Earhart; of women stomping in puddles on their way to work, riding bikes up rocky trails and climbing mountains.”  PiB was evident all over fashion month streets as well as on the fall runways. The adventurous look works with slim or slouchy trousers, most often tucked into mid-shaft boots — key footwear for next season.

FALL INTO SPRING

The collections may be for Fall-Winter 18, but all the florals say springtime. The runways are awash in splashy flower motifs of all kinds — watercolors, warp-prints, inky line drawings, silhouettes and appliqués. Gorgeous, giant blossoms adorn dresses, skirts, hooded cloaks, printed velvet tights, and even enliven a classic peacoat for men.

IT’S A PLAID PLAID WORLD

Plaids rule the pre-fall collections and are already showing up on men’s fall 18 runways. All kinds of plaids work: tartans, buffalo checks, tiny gun-checks, Prince-of-Wales layouts, box plaids, blanket plaids and more. Large-scaled versions look especially right, often ensembled with clashing or contrasting layers for a plaid-on-plaid effect. The pattern, which can go mid-century classic, 80s punk or 90s grunge, is used for bags, hats, socks and footwear as well.

BANNER DAY

Stripes get wider, bolder and more colorful for next spring. Whether duotone and evenly spaced awning stripes or multi-colored, multi-width bayadere versions, graphic bands of color enliven shorts, dresses, knits and accessories. Pieced constructions, diagonal placements, wavy layouts or mixes of different striped patterns bring more newness.

AMISH COUNTRY

While a prim, buttoned-up Amish aesthetic has been around for a few seasons, the look is evolving with more color, more detail, and the emergence of folkloric print motifs that echo the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of “hex” signs. These decorations often include stars, stylized birds, hearts, tulips and tree forms. For fashion it means shirts buttoned up to the collar, high ruffled necklines, layered apron looks and hooks rather than buttons.

MAD FOR PLAID

Plaids lose their winter connotation and move boldly into spring. Runways are awash in yarn-dye suitings, plaid chiffon dresses, tartan coats, overprinted windowpane checks, plaids on the bias and more, either worn as a statement piece or combined into one ensemble. Styling ranges from neo-grunge to preppy, and colors can be classic or offbeat. In general, the scale of the patterns are large, but specifics don’t really matter here — if it’s plaid, it works.

RADIANT CHILD

No longer do cotton candy pinks and lemon-drop yellows signify sugary treats or kitschy Pink Pony fantasies. Like new plant-based matcha lattes and unicorn cream cheese (colored with beet juice, turmeric and chamomile), these delicate tints and glistening surfaces speak of optimism, creativity and wellness. Slick coatings, sequins, guipure lace, sheer overlays and bits of summer velvet add to the incandescent feel.
