SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

The one-shoulder silhouette replaces the off-the-shoulder “Bardot” as the shoulder-show neckline of choice. The one-shoulder look is a bit more sophisticated with its asymmetric cut, and offers myriad options for layering. Designers show the look on its own or worn over tees or tanks, in sleeveless or single-sleeved styles. The diagonal neckline can be slanted toward the opposite underarm, toga-style — or can drape over the top of the shoulder for a modified effect. The detail works for both knits and wovens, whether easy or body-con, and looks particularly fresh for activewear silhouettes.

DYES & DIPS

Tie-dye and dyed effects are uptrending, not only on Resort runways but for Menswear as well. There are big swathes of painted color for an outerwear piece, mottled effects for denim, and ombréd knit sets that have a faux dip-dye effect. For sweaters and knit tops there are tie-dyed stripes in berry shades, splotchy multi-colors, and a hippyish tie-dye tee with strategically placed tie-dye medallions and dyed sleeves.

KNIT ONE, PATCH TWO

The newest sweaters for resort are pieced and patched. The patched effect can be as simple as color-blocked intarsias or as complex as a collage of mixed stitchery. Space-dyed or marled yarns add more dimension, as do fringed edges. The technique works for flat knits and ribs as well as chunky cables, and a stretch lace version shows that these can be interpreted in cut-and-sew as well. Patchworked leather bags and sandals complete the look.

RUCHING HOME

Ruching is the new ruffle. Resort 2019 collections are full of these softly dimensional details, used for dresses, skirts, sweaters — and even pant legs. Horizontal placements gently suggest a waist on roomy dresses. Some ruchings are asymmetrical, or are adjustable with strings ties for customizable effects.

INTARSIA AMBROSIA

Intarsia sweaters have officially lost their tacky “ugly Chistmas swater” stigma. The streets of fashion capitals are awash in knits with jacquarded graphics, most specifically Alberta Ferretti’s “days of the week” sweaters, Loewe’s sophisticated fair-isles, and Raf Simons’ oversized ‘I Love NY” pullover. These designer versions are all sold out, but new interpretations are sure to catch on for next fall.
