HEAVEN SENT

Celestial blues make a gentle yet powerful statement for next season. Pale tints that take their cue from sunny skies or limpid pools look even more dreamy in diaphanous nylons or fluid satins. Designers used these blues in head-to-toe ensembles or in clashing totals, as in a turquoise sweater with a pale blue skirt and lilac boots. For a contrasting note, a flash of goldenrod yellow brings in an offbeat accent to a crystal pleated skirt.

GO WITH THE FLUO

Early indications in New York this week signal that fluorescents rule for next spring. Some of the freshest looks had the glowing hues placed against not-so-neon brights or nude-toned neutrals. We loved the combos of shocking pink next to lilac, Sprouse-pink with mango, or highlighter green with cocoa brown — all toning down the effect just enough to make these colors wearable for all markets. The neons look great when mixed with each other too, especially right for active or juniors.

ITTY BITTY BAGS

The giant carryall is giving way to the bite-sized bag. In contrast to all the colossal coats, roomy sack dresses, stretched-out sweaters and rave-wide pants shown for next season, these diminutive satchels and tiny totes offer a sense of scale. Many have long straps so that they can be worn cross-body, and they are often styled with another larger bag — perhaps as a going-out-after-work option when a heavy handbag is too great a burden to bear.

BASKET CASE

Wicker or straw basket bags are popping up on the runways in New York, and are seen carried by trendsetters on the street as well. Most are hard and structured with a top-handle, but softer versions work as belt-bags and totes. Natural leathers or ropes provide accents, and colors are usually natural or white. Embroideries provide more whimsy or wit. While the rustic straws provide contrast with tailored styles, the preferred ensemble includes a soft floral-printed frock, for a romantic Marie-Antoinette-on-the-farm look.
