The knife-pleated skirt, re-introduced to fashion by Alessandro Michele for Gucci a few season’s back, shows no signs of slowing down. The skirts work in solids, menswear plaids or prints. The key is using fabric — whether lustrous satin, crisp suitings, iridescent organza or lingerie-worthy lace — that is firm enough to hold a pleat yet lightweight enough to achieve the requisite flow.
PROPHESY/PROOF: THE MYSTICS — Saturated blues grace the runway this fall, reaffirming the Mystic Trend Tale in MintModa’s FW18 forecast. While the mystical ultramarines and deep cobalts lend themselves to lush velvets and sheared furs, they look particularly wearable and fresh this season when used on casual silhouettes in workwear fabrics.
Perhaps an even more effective statement than the all-black initiative at the recent Golden Globes, the pantsuits that adorned women on the Grammy Awards red carpet showed a spontaneous movement toward personal expression and female power. The suits, many of which were printed, brocaded or embroidered with flowers, projected strength and sexiness without “male gaze” objectification. Most of the silhouettes featured sharply tailored jackets with flare-leg pants.
