LOVE YOU BUCKETS

The bucket hat, a key accessory for next fall, continues right into Resort. The hat, with its easy crushable shape, has an unpretentious quality that makes it more wearable than more structured fedoras or sun hats. Newness comes from higher crowns and textural effects created with raffia fringe, crochet, raw edges or resort-ready prints. Brims range from the classic trapunto-stitched narrow band to face-framing and floppy for more drama.

DYES & DIPS

Tie-dye and dyed effects are uptrending, not only on Resort runways but for Menswear as well. There are big swathes of painted color for an outerwear piece, mottled effects for denim, and ombréd knit sets that have a faux dip-dye effect. For sweaters and knit tops there are tie-dyed stripes in berry shades, splotchy multi-colors, and a hippyish tie-dye tee with strategically placed tie-dye medallions and dyed sleeves.

TRENCH RE-TRENCH

The trench coat, like a motorcycle jacket or a pair of jeans, is one of those basics that can be endlessly reinvented while still maintaining its design integrity. For next Resort, newness comes from sleeveless versions, color or fabric-blocking, cape-like slits for arms or puff-shouldered sleeves with channel-elastic cuffs. Fabrics include rustic linens, smooth cottons, lightweight corduroy and flat-quilted nylon. Novel touches can be as splashy as floral-appliquéd shoulders or as subtle as a single red button.

FARM FRESH

Many of the looks being shown for Cruise/Resort confirm our Foragers Trend Tale for Spring 19. There are all sorts of country-fresh separates and dresses cut from humble dishtowel checks, simple stripes, crinkled plaids and homespun patchworks. Raw or self-fringed edges add to the unfettered feel, as do string-ties and flounced hemlines — most hitting an inch or two above the ankle.

STRIPE POWER

Stripes are coming in from all directions for next fall. Mitered placements and sharp angles elevate the pattern from the classic to the unconventional. Uneven spacing, varied widths and vivid color provide more newness, as do textural stitches and head-to-toe styling — right down to the striped tights.

BIG BOX

Even when an item is a perennial, there are subtle shifts in material, proportion and silhouette that move the piece forward and speak of the “now”. Such is the case with this season’s trench coat.  The newest must-have versions are boxy, with a straight, waistless shape. Firm fabrics or smooth leathers uphold the rectangular silhouette, and bellows pockets or flat-flaps echo the squared-off aesthetic. Sleeveless styles offer lots of options for easy layering. Most of the boxy trenches on the runways are minimalist, but Prada decorated the extended shoulders and flaps with an array of cabochons and colorful paillettes.
